How Online Poker Bonuses Work

If you play online poker, you probably already know about the online poker bonus. If you frequent poker sites online or read poker magazines, you may have seen specific bonuses advertised on television. If you're relatively new to the online game though, you may be wondering, how do these bonuses work exactly?

The most common bonuses you will encounter are sign-up and loyalty bonuses. These bonuses reward a player for joining up and continuing to play on a particular site. You can find these bonuses at your favorite online poker information website or in poker magazines. What you will actually get is a bonus code that you will enter at the online poker site where you choose to play when prompted. It is critical to remember that you must input the code when making your first deposit. If you do not, you will lose your sign-up bonus opportunity, even if you make another deposit on the same day, or without having ever played a hand. Sometimes you will be able to find more specific offers, such as Texas Holdem bonus, but that's not very common.

Once you have your sign-up bonus, you have to clear it. Clearing a bonus means playing a certain number of raked hands. The number of Texas Holdem (or some other poker form) hands you have to play is usually related to the size of the bonus. The more money you are clearing, the more hands you have to play. Once you've played the requisite number of hands, the money is released into your account. There was a time when some bonuses were sticky, meaning you could never withdraw the bonus money, only use it to play with. Currently, with online sites competing for business, most bonuses are not sticky, and you can remove the money from the site as soon as you clear the bonus.

You cannot get more than one sign-up bonus from the same site, however you can get multiple sign-up bonuses by signing up and playing on multiple sites (this is often referred to as “bonus whoring'). You can also get loyalty bonuses for continuing to play on a site. These loyalty bonuses are not found in magazines or outside poker sites, but rather are offered to you by the online poker site where you are playing, based on how often you play there or what promotion the site happens to be offering all their players this month.

Due to recent United States legislation, many online poker sites no longer accept U.S. customers. If you are playing from the United States, you will not be able to take advantage of bonuses offered by these sites. However, at the current time, it is still perfectly legal to play and collect bonuses on sites that do accept United States players. The Poker Players Alliance is a pro poker-lobbying group that is fighting diligently to remove these restrictions on U.S. players so that poker players everywhere can enjoy online texas holdem poker bonuses for all sites.
